Hi Gav
I get asked that all the time, so hopefully this page should clarify things for you.

First, we need to figure out what you would like in terms of detail, black & white, colourful or painterly?
You can use anything iv’e done in the past as reference.

  • Black and white is the easiest and cheapest.
  • Colourful is pretty similar to the first option except with a background and shading on the character to add depth.
  • Painterly is unlike the first two options, as you don’t see an outline around the character and it is much more refined.

I don’t get asked that very often…

The best thing to do is give me as many photos as you can get of that person (or pet) which show them smiling or doing something funny. If they have a specific eye colour, that’s important as photos don’t always show it clearly.

If you don’t already know what you want with the piece, any details you can think of which are quirky or funny about your friend are important.
Hobbies, sports, pets and habits can all be used to create a unique scenario for the caricature.
Again, check out any previous pieces iv’e done to get a good idea of what is possible.

I thought you would never ask!

If you want something other than a caricature, then that’s another thing I love to do.
If you have a photo of a significant other and feel that a painting of them would be an awesome present for them or yourself, then as mentioned before, I would just need photos and time.
